Most of Maui is so civilised that a breath of solitude away from the sea can be a welcome retreat. Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area is a good place to pitch a tent with proper permits, but be prepared to get your showers in the warm coastal waters as this campground is all natural. Polipoli Spring is above 6,000 feet, so come braced for chilly nights and views out over the island during the day.
