Pu`uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Step back in time to a sanctuary of Hawaii's past where traditional Hawaiian lifestyle is preserved. Ancient temples and ki'i (wooden images) whisper stories from the past. This place provided refuge to Hawaiians who came here. Today, the park continues as a sanctuary for visitors seeking a peaceful place and as a safe haven for all of the native wildlife living here.

 Directions

From Kailua-Kona, travel south towards Volcano on Highway 11. Turn right towards the ocean on Route 160 at the Honaunau Post Office. Watch for the park sign on the left as you drive towards the ocean.


 Climate
 

Honaunau is typically hot and sunny with daytime temperatures in the upper 80's and night time temperatures in the 70's.

 Things To Do
 

Immerse yourself in Hawaii as it once was. Walk the Royal Grounds, observe a cultural demonstration, or simply relax and enjoy a sunset at the picnic area. These are just a few of the many activities to be enjoyed at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.


 Picknicking
 

Pack a lunch and head to the picnic area after spending the morning in the park. Or fire up one of the charcoal grills available for public use and plan a sunset cookout and stay to watch the stars. Be sure to with the front desk for any surf or weather hazards and park operating hours before planning your excursion.

Large groups of over 30 persons must obtain a permit to use the area. Permit inquiries can be made to Ranger Charles Hua at 328-2326.

Tables are open to everyone and tables may not be reserved. The use of umbrellas, tarps and such equipment are not permitted in order to preserve the natural landscape.


 Hiking
 

Connect with the Hawaii of days past and enjoy the peace and serenity as you stroll along on the self-guided tour through the Royal Grounds and the Pu'uhonua. Along the way, you will will have the opportunity to see many of the features that make this area such a special place. For those wanting to explore further, the backcountry trail offers a 2 mile round trip hike along the 1871 trail through the agricultural areas that surround the park. On this trail, you will encounter Hawaiian heiau, holua sled courses and the dramatic Keanae'e cliffs.

This ancient trail existed long before Europeans arrived in Hawaii and originally connected coastal villages along the South Kona Coast. In the 1800's the trail was expanded to accommodate those traveling in horse-drawn carriages.

Plan a safe and fun hike. Bring sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen and plenty of water.

 Outdoor Boating and Fishing
 

Recreational fishing is permitted in the park. All fishing must be in compliance with Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources regulations including open fishing seasons, catch sizes, net type and sizes, and bag limits. Bow and arrow fishing, loaded spear guns and commercial fishing are not permitted in the park.

 Outdoor Bird and Wildlife Viewing
 

The park provides the opportunity to spot some of the unique wildlife found in Hawaii. Along the shore, you can watch for green sea turtles and may be lucky enough to spot one basking in the sun. Coastal birds may be seen feeding along the rocky coastlines, and you may even glimpse Hawaii's native bat feeding over the water at sunset.

 Places To Go
 

Take a walk back in time to old Hawaii as it was many centuries ago. Ki'i (carved statues) watch over and surround the Hale o Keawe, the former resting area of 26 Keawe line chiefs. The great wall, spanning up to 17 feet wide and averaging 10 feet in height will amaze you with its huge rocks fitting together like locking puzzle pieces. Footpaths take you past Hawaiian temples and other structures built after European arrival. Puuhonua o Honaunau has many places visitors can go to experience the Hawaii of yesterday and today.
