Photo of Kilauea / Princevill, Hawaii

The rugged beauty of Kauai's north coast interior is supplemented by the serene half-moon beaches that edge the shore. Kilauea is the closest thing to civilization inland from a handful of these sandy strips.

Surf Kahili Beach on Kilauea Bay when the waves are up and it's too rough to swim. For those less inclined to board sports, take up snorkel and mask at 'Anini Beach County Park for some sea-viewing along the reef.

Go west along Route 56 for the 'big' city (pop. 9,000) and consequent hotels of Princeville. Catch up with your golf game at top-rated Princeville Makai Golf Course or, ditch the golf cart and mount a steed for a ride horseback through the expanse of Princeville Ranch.

Those tired of so much time on the ground can skim past the soaring scenery of the Na Pali Coast on a helicopter site-seeing trip out of Princeville.

Kilauea is just a few minutes east of Princeville and north of Lihue.
